Underwater Optics as Symbolic Form

چکیده
Technologies enable new modes of perception, which transform the imagination and inspire the arts. A vivid example of this process is the transvaluation of the underwater environment in the Western imaginary. For millennia, there were only very rudimentary technologies to observe this realm of our planet that is inhospitable to human physiology for longer than a breath of air.1 Humans understood it through the little they could glean from the surface via mariners’ sounding lines and what was fished up or washed up on shore. To descend into the depths was to drown, and the undersea world was hence imagined as a horrifying abyss, with occasional glimpses of fabulous riches. One famous example of this fantasy is Clarence’s sea nightmare of “the slimy bottom of the deep” in William Shakespeare’s Richard III: “Methought I saw a thousand fearful wrecks; /Ten thousand men that fishes gnaw’d upon;/Wedges of gold, great anchors, heaps of pearl,/ Inestimable stones, unvalued jewels,/ All scatter’d in the bottom of the sea.”2 During the nineteenth century, however, science and technology started to penetrate the obscurity beneath the water’s surface in the most technologically advanced nations, notably France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As Helen Rozwadowski has detailed in Fathoming the Ocean: The Discovery and Exploration of the Deep Sea, the factors catalyzing this penetration were complex.3 They involved developments in biology, geology, engineering, communications, warfare, and the culture of the spectacle. Once human perception, action, and curiosity were immersed in the depths, the underwater imagination blossomed as well. Jules Verne’s Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1869–1870) is a milestone marking the imaginative transformation of the depths from an obscure abyss to a holistic, diverse environment. Compare, for example, the sea bottom in Richard III to Captain Nemo and Profes-

Exposure of the human body to ambient pressures greater than that at sea level may result in various disorders, some of which have ocular manifestations. Additionally, some eye disorders and postoperative states may be adversely affected by the underwater environment or other hyperbaric exposures. The prevalence of recreational, military, and commercial diving, as well as the medical use of hyp...
متن کاملNon-line-of-sight underwater optical wireless communication network.
The growing need for ocean observation systems has stimulated considerable interest within the research community in advancing the enabling technologies of underwater wireless communication and underwater sensor networks. Sensors and ad hoc sensor networks are the emerging tools for performing extensive data-gathering operations on land, and solutions in the subsea setting are being sought. Eff...
متن کاملExploring underwater target detection by imaging polarimetry and correlation techniques.
Underwater target detection is investigated by combining active polarization imaging and optical correlation-based approaches. Experiments were conducted in a glass tank filled with tap water with diluted milk or seawater and containing targets of arbitrary polarimetric responses. We found that target estimation obtained by imaging with two orthogonal polarization states always improves detecti...

We investigate the optical absorption and scattering properties of underwater media pertinent to our underwater free space quantum key distribution (QKD) channel model. With the vector radiative transfer theory and Monte Carlo method, we obtain the attenuation of photons, the fidelity of the scattered photons, the quantum bit error rate, and the sifted key generation rate of underwater quantum ...

Since long ago the motif of “fish” has been one of the motifs employed in Persian artworks. As well as having extraordinary beauty of form, fish has deep symbolic meanings and has motivated Persian artists of different ages to employ it in their works. Rugs of Safavid era are among such artworks. Both in ancient Iranian mythology and also in Islamic culture, fish has enjoyed a signi...
